No. 2807 Steam locomotive NEEDS YOUR HELP.

PLEASE NOTE, that the below 2 x HGO appeal forms are to be updated in 2024 but until the new forms are produced, you can still make Donations by using them. The locomotive No. 2807 has completed its HGO but its own Tender was found to need substantial repairs and re-build and accordingly the 2807 FLA has agreed to now assist with the Funds for this work. 2807 is currently using a hired in tender for its steaming duties until its own tender is serviceable.

HEAVY GENERAL OVERHAUL
BOILER SPONSORSHIP APPEAL
The initial project to restore Great Western Railway 2800 class 2-8-0 steam locomotive No.2807 was completed in June 2010. This followed   29 years of restoration, costing around £500,000, before the locomotive re-entered service on the Gloucestershire-Warwickshire Railway.
No.2807’s boiler ticket expired in 2020, after ten years in heritage line operation, and this then triggered the start of the Heavy General Overhaul of the locomotive.  This overhaul is expected to take at about 2 years, provided the work can be fully funded and there are no unforeseen problems come to light.
The estimated cost of the materials required is around £500,000. Due to  the element of uncertainty involved in these costs, the 2807FLA is continuing to raise funds throughout the overhaul by seeking sponsorship of major items involved. As a registered charity the 2807FLA is also entitled to receive Gift Aid on sponsorship donations, assuming the sponsor is a UK taxpayer.
Secretary, Mr Kieran BARBER,
Flat 28 , Riplingham , Arlington Avenue ,
Leamington Spa,  CV32 5UQ

The most significant work involved in the overhaul is restoration of the boiler. The costs of sponsored items in the accompanying list is based on the actual costs, allowing for inflation, that were incurred at the Llangollen works for the initial restoration of the boiler, together with a forecast of the degree of wear and tear now expected at the end of this boiler ticket.
The existing tyres will require re-profiling and it is assumed that this work will be arranged to coincide with stoppages for boiler repair. The budget estimate for the work is based on the costs of renewal work carried out at Llangollen and Buckfastleigh in 2010.
The following lists the items likely to be required during the Heavy General Overhaul for which sponsorship is sought:

90 crown stays                         100 firebox stays
190 boiler tubes                       28 superheater elements

The brick arch will need rebuilding
The firegrate will require new firebars, and the grate supports may need to be replaced
The ashpan will also require renewal

There are also many more items of lesser expense but just as essential in a major overhaul operation.
Consequently if you are unable at present to commit to sponsoring any of the items listed above, a smaller donation would of course be very welcome.
Crown stays are the long steel stays that hold the firebox crown in place,
Firebox stays support the sides of the firebox from the outer steel shell.

HEAVY GENERAL OVERHAUL SPONSORSHIP FOR
FOR ALL PARTS OTHER THAN THE BOILER APPEAL

The existing tyres will require re-profiling and this work will be arranged to coincide with the stoppage for boiler repair. Major attention will be required to the lower end of the locomotive comprising the frames, wheelsets, cylinders pistons and valve gear. The following lists the items for which sponsorship is sought: Tyre rectification: 8 wheels, each divided into 80 segments. Inspection and repairs to frames as required. Inspection and repairs to cylinder linings for main and valve cylinders. Renewal of valve heads and rings to match cylinder wear. The budget estimate for this work is based on the costs of renewal work carried out at Llangollen and Buckfastleigh in 2010. During its boiler ticket, No. 2807 has earned income from steaming on GWSR and from its use on tour at other preserved lines but these are not sufficient to fully cover the HGO costs .Consequently if you are unable at present to commit to sponsoring any of the items listed herein, a smaller donation would of course be very much appreciated. The 2807 FLA is therefore inviting supporters to make their contribution towards the Locomotive Heavy General Overhaul Appeal by sponsorship.
